With a quiet, comfortable interior and pleasant on-road handling, the Ford Explorer delivers attributes a lot of suburbanites crave. Like many of the vehicles in the field, the Explorer is not designed for berserk, gully-whumping off-road heroics; comparatively smooth dirt roads and trails are more its speed. That meshes fine with the way the majority of drivers like to use their 'utes, and it allows the Explorer to offer a ride and driving feel that approaches sedan standards. A modern looking, roomy, dual-airbag interior and solid hauling and towing capacity make the Explorer an ideal choice for drivers looking for family-toting utility and convenience, without the ho-hum image of a minivan. Riding on a double-wishbone front suspension (new in 1995), the Explorer offers confident steering and predictable handling. Softly sprung, the suspension has a cushy feel, but tends to hobby-horse a little more readily over repetitive bumps than its archrival, the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This year's big news is an optional 5.0-liter V-8 engine spun off the old Mustang/F-150 pickup powerplant. Initially available only in two-wheel-drive Explorer XLTs, the 4x4 version of the V-8 has now come on-line. The 210-horsepower engine propels the rear-drive Explorer to 60 mph in 8.8 seconds, more than two seconds quicker than with the standard 160-horsepower 4.0-liter V-6. Though the Ford Explorer isn't a standout in any single respect, its overall goodness has made it the SUV sales leader for five years running.
